Mahama Ayariga, the majority leader, praised the NDC government's achievements. He highlighted the strong rebound of the cedi. This rebound is helping people save money on transport fares and food prices.
In parliament, Ayariga said, “Mr Speaker, we must support our Finance Minister.” He emphasized fiscal prudence and efforts to strengthen the cedi. He mentioned reducing inflation and interest rates to boost the private sector.
Ayariga noted a 14.1% strengthening of the cedi against the Euro. He also shared recent fuel price reductions:
- Super XP: from GH₵15.85 to GH₵13.27 (16.28% decrease)
- Diesel XP: from GH₵15.99 to GH₵13.87 (13.26% decrease)
- Super XP 95: from GH₵15.96 to GH₵15.27 (4.32% decrease)
Transport fares have also decreased across major routes.
Dr. Johnson Asiamah, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, clarified that international reserves are not supporting the cedi's strength. He stated that the cedi has appreciated by 24.1%.
Asiamah dismissed claims of deliberate manipulation by the Central Bank for currency appreciation. He explained that this appreciation results from disciplined monetary policy and improved remittance flows.
At the Ghana CEO Summit in Accra on May 26, 2025, he reiterated that market forces drive this change. The Central Bank is not using reserves for support or creating unsustainable appreciation.
These changes are structural and aimed at ensuring long-term stability in Ghana’s economy.
