Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He is concerned about their appointment of Henry Kwasi Prempeh as Chair of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). Amidu warns this decision may backfire before the 2028 elections.
In an open letter to MyNewsGH, Amidu shared his worries. He believes Prempeh's political and ideological views are troubling. He stated, “The Constitution is not the problem or the Council of State.” Instead, he blames "We the People," especially the educated elite and middle class.
Amidu argues that those meant to protect Ghana’s constitutional values have been compromised. He cites Prempeh's ties to institutions like the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
He expressed concern about how these organizations operate. “The timing of the IEA facilitation process... suggests partisan politics,” he wrote.
Amidu also highlighted historical issues with these NGOs. He noted that “the IEA was established in 1989 to facilitate the demise of PNDC and NDC governments.” The CDD-Ghana emerged later with support from a U.S. Embassy political officer.
According to Amidu, Prempeh’s recent calls for reforming the Council of State are contradictory. He questioned why these issues only arose after January 7, 2025. Notably, Prempeh served under President Akufo-Addo without raising concerns then.
Amidu defended the Council of State as a necessary institution. He explained that it was designed to mediate among Ghana’s three branches of government. The framers intended all public officials to act honorably and uphold their oaths.
He cautioned that trusting Prempeh could lead to repeating past mistakes. “The NDC has chosen to sup with the devil by appointing Henry Kwasi Prempeh,” he warned.
As elections approach in 2028, Amidu referenced an Akan proverb: “If an insect bites you, it’s already inside your cloth.” He concluded with advice for the NDC: “A stitch in time saves nine.”
