NDC never supported calls for a state of emergency over galamsey – Sammy Gyamfi

Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), denied supporting calls for a state of emergency. These calls were made by civil society organizations regarding illegal mining under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Gyamfi stated he opposed these calls. Instead, he advocated for removing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his appointees. He believes they harmed the Ghanaian people through their actions.

He shared his views on Accra-based Asempa FM. Gyamfi noted that while some party members supported the call, the NDC as a whole did not. The party never issued any statement endorsing it.

"I spoke about this on Good Morning Ghana," he said. "I disagreed with declaring a state of emergency." He emphasized that the focus should have been on voting out Akufo-Addo and his team.

Gyamfi pointed out that many officials were involved in illegal mining activities. He criticized the idea of punishing Ghanaians who bought mining machines.

"The NDC never backed calls for a state of emergency," he reiterated. Some individuals may have supported it, but there was no official statement from the party.

He also mentioned that gold exports increased during the 2017/18 mining ban by the NPP. However, he argued that this ban was ineffective and merely a facade. Gyamfi believed supporting an emergency declaration would allow officials to seize people's concessions unfairly.
