NDC packing courts with loyalists to weaken judicial independence – Appiagyei

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has made serious accusations. She claims the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is undermining Ghana’s judiciary. Appiagyei says they are appointing party loyalists to key judicial roles.

Her comments come as Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo faces misconduct allegations. This case has sparked a national debate about removing high-ranking judges. Many question the lack of clear procedures in this process.

On May 27, during Parliament's first sitting after recess, Appiagyei spoke out. She criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s recent Supreme Court nominations. She called them politically motivated and aimed at packing the court with loyalists.

“The president is trying to bind the Judicial Council's hands,” she said. “These seven nominations are designed to favor Executive interests.”

On April 30, President Mahama nominated seven Court of Appeal Justices for elevation to the Supreme Court. This was done under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. According to Jubilee House, these nominations aim to strengthen the apex court with experienced jurists.

The nominees include:
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Haflsata Amaleboba

Additionally, there are plans for new rules on removing Superior Court Justices, according to Ayariga.
