The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus will not interfere in the sanitation contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, issued a statement. He clarified that the Sanitation Committee of Parliament has no authority over YEA’s decision on this contract.
Ayariga said, “The NDC Parliamentary Caucus has not authorized any interference.” He emphasized that media reports suggesting otherwise are incorrect.
He noted that the Chairman of the Committee confirmed no member attempted to interfere.
Ayariga warned that individual opinions from committee members do not reflect Parliament's position.
“Comments defending Zoomlion’s contract should be ignored,” he stated. These do not represent the Committee or Parliament's views.
He advised local assemblies against feeling pressured to enter contracts with specific companies.
“No assembly should allow itself to be intimidated into contracts,” Mr. Ayariga added.
He reminded everyone that last session, Parliament directed 80% of the Common Fund to go directly to Assemblies. This allows them independence in deciding their development priorities.
