NDC plotting Mahama’s third term with CJ’s removal – NPP’s General Secretary

Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made serious accusations. He claims the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is planning to give President John Dramani Mahama a third term.

Kodua linked this plot to an attempt to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. He stated that the argument centers around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.

He alleged that some people want to interpret Article 66(2) differently. They argue that the two-term limit applies only to successive terms. This interpretation suggests Mahama can run again since his terms were not consecutive.

In an interview on Peace FM's Kokrokoo on April 24, 2025, Kodua said, “Certain people plan to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution incorrectly.” He emphasized that Mahama lost before winning later, making him eligible for another run.

Kodua warned, “Mark today’s date, April 24, 2025. We will return to this issue.” He suggested that if there were no such plans, Chief Justice Torkornoo would not have been asked to stay home based on a frivolous petition.

His comments followed President Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. This action came after a prima facie case was determined against her by the Council of State.

The President formed a committee under Article 146(6) of the Constitution. The committee includes:

- Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang (Chairman)
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu (Member)
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo (Former Auditor-General)
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo (Ghana Armed Forces)
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah (University of Ghana)

Additionally, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo, filed a motion at the Supreme Court. He seeks to halt Chief Justice Torkornoo's suspension over claims of due process violations by President Mahama.

Meanwhile, Franklin Cudjoe from IMANI Africa stated that President Mahama is not seeking a third term and will not attempt it.
