NDC plotting to secure a third term for Mahama – Afenyo-Markin alleges

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has made serious allegations. He claims the National Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to change the constitution. This change would allow President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term.

Afenyo-Markin's accusations follow Mahama’s nomination of seven Court of Appeal judges. He believes this move is part of a hidden agenda for a third term.

At a New Patriotic Party (NPP) press conference, he expressed concerns about these nominations. He stated they threaten the separation of powers and judicial independence.

“This is not a routine judicial appointment,” he said. “It’s an effort to pack the Supreme Court with loyalists.”

He pointed out that nominating seven judges after suspending the Chief Justice shows political ambition. Afenyo-Markin argued this undermines democratic governance and violates constitutional principles.

He warned that such actions could weaken public confidence in the judiciary. They also risk destabilizing Ghana’s democratic institutions, he added.

Afenyo-Markin urged civil society, religious leaders, and citizens to unite against these moves. “This is how a government tightens its grip on power through the backdoor,” he said.

He emphasized that this issue transcends partisan lines and affects national integrity. The justice system must not be turned into a political tool.

President Mahama has nominated seven new judges for the Supreme Court. These nominations comply with Article 144 (2) of the 1992 Constitution and need Parliament's approval.

The nominees are:
1. Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
2. Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
3. Justice Senyo Dzamefe
4. Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
5. Justice Philip Bright Mensah
6. Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
7. Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
