Benjamin Kofi Quashie chairs the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders in South Africa. He believes the NDC can defeat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in future elections. He pointed to the NDC's approval ratings and their performance in past elections.
In an interview with Joy News on April 16, 2025, he stated, "Anytime, any day, we would beat them hands down." Quashie advised the party to focus on their current mandate. This focus will help them win future elections.
Regarding potential leaders for the NDC after Mahama, he mentioned that discussions should wait. He noted that it is still early in President John Mahama's government. The party should support Mahama instead of speculating about leadership changes.
Quashie acknowledged that the current Vice President could lead the NDC post-Mahama. She has made history as both Ghana’s first female Vice Chancellor and Vice President. However, he emphasized that leadership discussions should not distract from governing.
Other potential candidates include Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa and NDC Chair John Asiedu Nketia are also mentioned as possibilities.
Quashie expressed confidence that any of these candidates could defeat Dr. Bawumia of the NPP in a general election. He highlighted that Ghanaians believe the country is moving in a positive direction under the NDC's leadership.
"The NDC is doing far better," he said. "We should stay focused and ignore naysayers."
