Reverend Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, has made a statement. He said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face consequences if President John Mahama does not sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill. This bill is also known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Fordjour emphasized that this issue is politically sensitive. He warned that any president who neglects this bill risks their party's future. He believes it would be a serious mistake for the NDC if Mahama fails to sign it.
In an interview with Kafui Dey on YouTube, Fordjour stated, “If he doesn’t sign it, Ghanaians will show him the red card.” He added that mishandling this bill could turn support into anger among voters. The 2021 CDD Afrobarometer survey shows that 93% of NDC's votes could be at risk.
He urged political figures to prioritize their party’s fortunes over personal ambitions. If Mahama does not sign the bill, he predicts a significant loss for the NDC in 2028. Fordjour noted that LGBTQ+ issues influence political behavior in Ghana and beyond.
Meanwhile, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, announced news about the bill. He confirmed that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill is ready for its first reading in Parliament. This will happen during the second meeting of the Ninth Parliament.
Speaker Bagbin shared this information during his opening remarks for Parliament's new session. He mentioned three private members' bills are set for presentation: The Property Rights of Spouses Bill 2025, Constitution Amendment Bill 2025, and the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025.
