Dr. Gideon Boako, Member of Parliament for Tano North, has voiced concerns about scrapping the E-levy, Betting Tax, and COVID-19 levy, arguing that it could lead to the introduction of new taxes to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) commitments.
He warned that eliminating these taxes without clear alternatives might result in hidden tax hikes to address revenue shortfalls.
Boako emphasized that the government must be transparent, stating that they should not cancel taxes only to introduce new ones under different names.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister-designate Ato Forson assured Ghanaians that the NDC government plans to abolish these taxes, offsetting the revenue gap through expenditure cuts rather than new taxes.
