NE/R: 12 convicted over land dispute in Gbalo, fined GHc4,800 each by Nalerigu Court

A District Magistrate Court in Nalerigu has convicted 12 individuals. They were involved in a violent land dispute in the Gbalo community. This community is near Chereponi in the Northeast Region.

The court sentenced each convict to a fine of 400 penalty units. This is equivalent to GHS 4,800. If they do not pay, they face 18 months in prison. The sentencing followed nearly three years of legal proceedings. It was delivered on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

The police reported that the incident occurred on July 25, 2022. The convicts, residents of Gbalo, attacked the Sagong/Kukpong community. Their assault led to multiple houses being burned and significant property damage.

The arrests happened a month later on August 24, 2022. This followed an intelligence-led operation by the North East Regional Police Command.

His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako presided over the case. He found the accused guilty of conspiracy and causing unlawful damage. The court emphasized the seriousness of their actions.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabik Anmain made a statement after the verdict. He assured the public that police would pursue all perpetrators of violence. He urged communities to resolve disputes peacefully and legally.

“Community members are advised to use peaceful means for conflicts,” DSP Anmain stated.
