NESTF Assures Readiness to Resolve Ablekuma North Collation Dispute

The Chair of the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF), Inspector General Christian Tetteh Yohuno, reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution in Ablekuma North.

He spoke at a meeting on Thursday with officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) and security agencies. Mr. Yohuno emphasized the need for calm among political actors as the EC prepares to finalize results from three polling stations.

“Today, we gather at a critical juncture,” he stated. He noted that Ablekuma North has become a site of confrontation. Both NDC and NPP candidates have declared victory, causing rising tensions.

“The nation—and indeed the world—is upon us,” he added. He clarified that security agencies do not collate election results; this is solely the EC's responsibility. However, they are ready to ensure a secure environment for the process.

“Our role is to secure the process, not decide its outcome,” he said. He assured that their presence would be visible but not provocative. They will act swiftly but carefully while remaining neutral.

Mr. Yohuno warned against any attempts to disrupt the process through threats or violence. He pledged that NESTF personnel would be deployed firmly but with restraint.

“This exercise is a test case for Ghana,” he remarked. The outcome will influence public confidence in future elections, he added. “Let’s protect lives and uphold democracy.”

Deputy Commissioner Samuel Tettey also spoke at the meeting. He thanked security services for their support during the electoral process.

Tettey mentioned that 12 constituencies faced challenges during the December 7 polls, but 11 have been resolved. Only Ablekuma North remains unresolved.

He confirmed that the EC is ready to finalize collation with police support after prior consultations on how to proceed.

The meeting included representatives from various security agencies and the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). All stakeholders called for calm and urged restraint from political parties and the public.

The EC plans to announce a timeline for finalizing results from remaining polling stations soon.
