NHIA to expand free dialysis programme nationwide

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) plans to expand its free dialysis program. This will help more renal patients access life-saving treatment across the country.

As part of this initiative, the NHIA will buy more dialysis machines. They will also provide essential supplies for healthcare facilities nationwide. This expansion aligns with the government's strategy to improve critical healthcare access.

Dr. Victor Bampoe, CEO of the NHIA, explained the program's goals. It aims to include more kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He noted that a previous government started free dialysis services. Currently, there are 20 centers offering this service at no cost. Dr. Bampoe emphasized the need for sustainable funding for these services.

He stated that funding should not depend on limited resources. Instead, it should be treated like any other disease under NHIS. This move is expected to reduce financial burdens on patients and their families in Ghana.
