NLA corporate affairs head defends KGL contract amid calls for review

Chris Bilami, the Head of Corporate Communications at the National Lottery Authority (NLA), defended its partnership with KGL Technology Limited. He called this partnership essential for the NLA's sustainability.

In an interview on Neat FM, Bilami praised the revenue mobilization contract with KGL. He stated it has greatly improved the NLA’s operations and financial health.

“The contract is the lifeline of the NLA,” he said. “Without it, we would struggle to pay salaries and other costs.”

He noted that salaries are now paid on time by the 25th of each month. This is a significant improvement from previous practices.

Bilami mentioned that 80 percent of NLA’s current revenue comes from KGL. He said this fact can be verified by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

His comments respond to calls from some within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to end the 10-year contract. However, Bilami believes these calls are based on misinformation.

“This contract is delivering results,” he emphasized. “There is no need to review or cancel it.”

He added that even if KGL belongs to a former president, it deserves support as a legitimate Ghanaian business.

Bilami also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s focus on supporting all businesses contributing positively, regardless of politics.

“President Mahama is not vindictive like former President Akufo-Addo,” he said.

He urged critics to investigate thoroughly before making public statements about the deal. He believes extending the contract should not be an issue if it benefits Ghana.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem inaugurated a new seven-member Governing Board for the NLA. This was done on behalf of Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson in line with Section 36 of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722).

The newly appointed board members include:

- Mr. Frederick Amissah – Technical Advisor, Ministry of Finance (Chairman)
- Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam – Director General, NLA
- Mr. Edward Abrokwah – Director, Revenue Policy Division, Ministry of Finance
- Ms. Doreen Panyin Annan – Representative, Ministry of Interior
- Mrs. Helen Akpene Awo Ziwu – Solicitor-General and Representative, Office of Attorney General
- Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu – Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya
- Mr. Gerald Baffour Awuah Bonsu – President’s Nominee

The board will provide strategic oversight and policy direction for the NLA as it works to strengthen revenue generation and ensure compliance with its obligations.
