The National Labour Commission (NLC) has issued a directive. It ordered three university unions to end their indefinite strike. This action is based on Section 139(1)(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
The affected unions are:
- Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG)
- Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG)
- Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG)
The NLC stated, "We direct these unions to call off their strike."
Earlier today, on May 21, 2025, the unions began their strike. They cited the government's failure to fulfill a six-month-old agreement. This agreement was meant to improve their working conditions.
On May 12, 2025, the NLC was notified about the planned strike. The Acting Executive Secretary, Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, signed an urgent notice regarding this matter. The NLC then summoned both the unions and government representatives for a hearing on May 21.
In a letter dated May 13, the NLC instructed all parties to attend and asked the unions to suspend their action. This request was made under Section 160 of the Labour Act.
During today's hearing, government representatives reported that the unions had gone ahead with their strike. This was confirmed by a joint press release from the unions titled: “SSA-UoG, TUAAG and FUSSAG Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Government’s Continued Breach of Agreement.”
Due to this non-compliance by the unions, the NLC invoked Section 161 of the Labour Act. They decided not to continue with the hearing until the strike is officially called off.
