Godwin Kudzo Tameklo is the CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). He has called for help from security agencies. This collaboration aims to implement a 24-hour economy at fuel stations nationwide.
Mr. Tameklo spoke at a meeting in Koforidua. The meeting included the Eastern Regional Minister and regional security heads. He stressed the need for strict regulation to protect the petroleum industry from crime.
The petroleum sector faces many criminal activities. These include fuel smuggling, illegal siphoning, and fraud. Mr. Tameklo noted that fuel is valuable, making it a target for criminals.
He emphasized the need for involvement from various security agencies. This includes the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), police, customs, and fire service. Together, they can combat fuel-related crimes effectively.
Mr. Tameklo also mentioned future training programs for security agencies. These programs will enhance their ability to tackle petroleum-related offenses. He stated that a successful 24-hour economy depends on consumer safety and worker protection.
“Petroleum is hazardous,” he said, “and we cannot overlook safety concerns.” The NPA will work with the Fire Service to ensure high safety levels.
His call for collaboration is crucial due to vulnerabilities at night in some filling stations. Recently, armed robbers attacked a Total fuel station in Sekondi-Takoradi at dawn.
Fortunately, the manager had the safe keys but was not present during the robbery. As a result, the robbers could not steal anything.
Eastern Regional Minister Ms. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey pledged support from her office. She promised full cooperation to ensure safety and compliance in the Eastern Region's petroleum sector.
She suggested integrating the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) into NPA operations across all regions. This would strengthen security and enhance collaboration efforts within the industry.
