The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned political persecution. They accuse the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state security against opposition figures.
In a statement today, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong criticized the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi. Kumi is known as “Adenta Kumi.” Frimpong described the arrest as a “Rambo-style raid” by armed operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The arrest happened around 7:00 AM at Kumi’s home. Masked officers with AK-47 rifles stormed his residence. The NPP believes this was retaliation for Kumi’s petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
Kumi's petition called for dissolving a committee reviewing petitions about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal. The NPP stated, “Instead of addressing concerns, the state chose intimidation and force.” They see this as an attack on democratic accountability.
In another incident, armed officers also raided Bernard Antwi-Boasiako’s home. Antwi-Boasiako is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman. The party claims this occurred despite prior communication with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Wontumi had informed CID he could not attend a summons on May 21 due to medical reasons. He rescheduled for May 26. The NPP views both incidents as part of a pattern to weaken opposition voices.
Frimpong emphasized that these actions violate citizens' rights and threaten democracy in Ghana. He urged civil society groups and Ghanaians to condemn these acts of political persecution.
As tensions rise before an important election year, the NPP insists that Ghana's democracy is at risk. They are calling for an end to state-sponsored intimidation. The NDC has not yet responded to these allegations.
