NPP Flagbearership: What has each prospective candidate done for Ghana in public office?

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for the 2028 elections. Several names have emerged as potential flagbearers.

The race began when former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat after the 2024 election. His early concession earned him respect and raised a key question: who will lead the NPP in 2028?

This question is significant, especially within the NPP, known for fierce internal contests. Dr. Bawumia hinted he would run again during his recent thank-you tour.

His decision has been influenced by strong support from party stakeholders. Former contender Kennedy Agyapong also plans to contest again. Former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum announced his intention on Facebook but later deleted it.

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko may join the race too. Other potential candidates include former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, who hinted at running on radio.

Many Ghanaians, especially NPP members, are asking: what do these candidates offer? What are their public service records? Do they have the integrity and respect needed to win support?

Most candidates have public service experience that can be verified easily.

Dr. Bawumia stands out among them based on his record. The NPP's 2024 flagbearership race focused on integrity and commitment to public service.

Dr. Bawumia was considered the best candidate in 2024 and remains ahead now. He is seen as Ghana's most impactful Vice President in history.

It makes sense for the NPP to continue supporting Dr. Bawumia, similar to past leaders like Kufuor and Akufo-Addo. The NDC did something similar with Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.

Mills was not as impactful as Bawumia but had extensive experience in public service as Vice President under Rawlings.

Bawumia’s experience includes being a running mate twice and serving eight years as Vice President. He has initiated over 20 impactful public service initiatives that deserve support from his party.

While other contenders have served in public roles, their impacts do not match Dr. Bawumia’s vision and achievements, which are admired within the NPP and beyond.

Interestingly, many of Bawumia’s initiatives are still being implemented by the current government just months into its term.

His contributions as Vice President under Akufo-Addo remain unmatched, earning him appreciation from NPP members.

Dr. Bawumia has championed several significant policies:

- Bank of Ghana Gold Purchase Programme
- Issuance of the Ghana Card
- Zipline Medical Drone Delivery
- National Digital Address System
- Mobile Money Interoperability

These policies require skilled leadership for successful implementation, making Dr. Bawumia a strong candidate for future governance.

No other presidential aspirant in the NPP matches his record or reputation among party voters. It’s about proven performance in public service rather than mere promises.
