NPP, NDP To Demonstrate Against Suspension Of CJ

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Four political parties are planning a nationwide demonstration. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP) will protest on May 5, 2025.

They are protesting against the “unlawful suspension” of Ghana’s Chief Justice. They also oppose the “unlawful termination” of public servants' appointments.

The parties held an emergency meeting on April 24, 2025. They decided to defend the constitution and protect judicial independence. They believe these are under threat from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In their statement, they emphasized defending Ghana’s constitutional order. They stated that judicial independence is crucial for democracy. The parties noted that ignoring the rule of law harms democracy itself.

The NDC has a history of judicial intimidation. This trend is not new; it echoes past attempts to control the judiciary. For example, in 2010, there was an attempt to remove Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

Today, history seems to be repeating itself. The NDC aims to control every branch of government, including the judiciary. Citizens must not remain silent during this crisis.

This protest calls on all citizens to stand for justice and democracy. Ghanaians will not allow political power to undermine their republic's foundations. It is time for everyone—political parties, civil society groups, and religious organizations—to unite against this unlawful suspension.

This attack on judicial independence affects more than one individual; it threatens the Constitution itself. Ghanaians should remember the NDC's troubling legacy regarding the judiciary.

This demonstration focuses on principles rather than politics. It aims to protect the Constitution and uphold justice in Ghana.

Every Ghanaian who values justice and stability should join this protest. This fight is for our future and our rights as citizens.

To those who have remained silent: now is your time to act! The attempt to remove the Chief Justice reflects a broader agenda by the NDC.

There are indications that efforts may begin soon to remove other key officials, like those at the Electoral Commission. If successful, this could lead to greater political control over democratic institutions.

Worryingly, there may be plans for constitutional interpretation changes at the Supreme Court after reappointments favor loyalists. This could support John Mahama's bid for a third presidential term in 2028.

Regarding job security: creating jobs is vital but should not involve unlawfully terminating public servants' positions. Is this what Mahama promised—a regime where livelihoods suffer due to political revenge?

Signs of tyranny are evident under Mahama’s leadership; insensitivity must be confronted directly by Ghanaians.

Indifference now means endorsing democratic erosion and authoritarianism rising in its place.

Now is the time for action.
Now is your chance to raise your voice.
Be a citizen; do not just watch.
Stand up for democracy; oppose dictatorship!
