NPP, NDP To Demonstrate Against Suspension Of CJ

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Four political parties plan a nationwide demonstration on May 5, 2025.

The parties are the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP).

They protest against the “unlawful suspension” of Ghana’s Chief Justice. They also oppose the “unlawful termination” of public servants' appointments.

At an emergency meeting on April 24, 2025, they decided to defend the constitution. They aim to protect judicial independence from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

The parties issued a statement about their intentions. They emphasize defending Ghana’s constitutional order and judicial independence.

They believe that ignoring the rule of law threatens democracy itself. The NDC's history of judicial intimidation is concerning. A notable case was their failed attempt in 2010 to remove Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

Today, history seems to be repeating itself. The NDC seeks control over every branch of government, including the judiciary. Silence is not an option for citizens who care about justice.

This protest calls all citizens to stand for justice and democracy. Ghanaians will not allow political power to undermine their republic's foundations.

The unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice affects everyone, not just one person. It threatens the Constitution that unites Ghana's democracy.

Ghanaians should remember past actions by the NDC regarding the judiciary. This demonstration focuses on principles rather than politics.

It aims to protect the Constitution and ensure judicial independence remains intact. Citizens must reject impunity and join this fight for justice.

Every Ghanaian who values law and stability is urged to participate in this protest. This is a crucial moment for Ghana's future and democracy.

To those who have remained silent: now is your time to act. The attempt to remove the Chief Justice reflects a broader agenda by the NDC.

There are indications that efforts may begin against other officials, like the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. A compliant Chief Justice could lead to political control over democratic institutions.

Worryingly, there may be plans for constitutional interpretation changes at the Supreme Court after new appointments are made. This could support John Mahama’s bid for a third presidential term in 2028.

Unlawful Termination of Appointments

Creating jobs for youth is vital but should not involve wrongful dismissals of public servants. Is this what Mahama promised?

A regime where livelihoods are sacrificed for political revenge creates fear among citizens.

Signs of tyranny under Mahama’s leadership must be confronted directly. Ghanaians need to rise up in defiance to protect their dignity and democracy.

Indifference towards these issues only supports authoritarianism and weakens democratic foundations.

Now is the time for action.
Now is your chance to raise your voice.
Be an active citizen; do not remain a spectator.
Stand up for democracy; oppose dictatorship.
