Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), praised Kennedy Agyapong. Agyapong is a former presidential hopeful and MP for Assin Central. He decided to withdraw from the party’s “Thank You Tour” led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Kodua noted that Agyapong initially wanted to support the tour in unity. However, recent events, especially the stabbing of a KNUST student linked to Agyapong, prompted his withdrawal.
“In this atmosphere, Ken’s decision was wise,” Kodua said on Oyerepa TV. “His presence might have increased tension, so I respect his choice.”
He emphasized that Agyapong's willingness to join the tour should not be overlooked. “His initial intention was very positive,” he added. “Withdrawing shows a sense of responsibility.”
Kodua acknowledged concerns about unity within the party. He mentioned a divide among grassroots supporters.
“Currently, more Bawumia supporters are rallying behind him,” he explained. “Ken’s followers are doing the same for him. We need a unified front.”
Despite these challenges, Kodua reassured party members about NPP leadership's focus and commitment.
“We will not let these incidents distract us from our goal,” he stated. “The party is bigger than any one event or individual.”
Agyapong's withdrawal came after public attention on the stabbing incident in Kumasi. The incident resulted in a young man being hospitalized at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Agyapong has taken full responsibility for covering the victim’s medical and academic costs.
