Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, a member of the NDC’s Legal and Communications Team, has made accusations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He claims the NPP violated an agreement with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This arrangement was meant to allow a quiet visit to detained Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
Adawudu's comments came after a failed attempt by NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to meet Wontumi. They tried to see him at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters, where he was moved for security reasons.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on June 2, Adawudu stated that the party's leadership could not visit due to their breach of terms with EOCO. He explained that it was agreed they would come quietly with an entourage. This arrangement aimed to honor Wontumi's service as a former Vice President.
However, Adawudu noted that the NPP brought too many people along. As a result, Wontumi remains in custody because of their lack of strategy.
Chairman Wontumi has been held by EOCO for six days over financial crime allegations. These include fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27 and later taken into EOCO custody.
Wontumi received bail on May 28 set at GHC50 million with two sureties. However, his release faced delays due to legal complications. His legal team claims they met bail conditions by May 30 but he stayed in custody.
He was then moved to NIB for logistical and security reasons. On May 30, Dr. Bawumia and Afenyo-Markin visited NIB but could not see him. Bawumia later confirmed this failed meeting publicly.
Andy Appiah-Kubi has stated that all legal obstacles should be cleared by June 2 for Wontumi’s release.
