NPP calls for gov’t transparency on suspected drug and money laundering concerns

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the government to ensure transparency. They want accountability regarding suspected drug trafficking and money laundering in Ghana.

The party raised concerns about two foreign aircraft in the country. These are AirMed flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B.

On April 6, the NPP criticized the government's response to these concerns. They condemned the intimidation of minority voices expressing valid worries.

“The NPP strongly condemns this intimidation,” their statement said. “A satisfactory explanation for these aircraft's presence is needed.”

The NPP expressed dissatisfaction with how the government handled the situation. They noted that Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu's explanation did not meet public expectations.

His response was vague and defensive, increasing public suspicion, according to the NPP.

They pointed out strange circumstances surrounding the aircraft's operations. Both planes reportedly developed faults while in Ghana.

“This situation is baffling,” they stated. “Politicizing citizens' desire for clarity only deepens suspicion.”

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has also urged an investigation into these flights. The NPP highlighted this call for action in their statement.

Additionally, they demanded updates on two major drug trafficking cases. These include a $350 million cocaine bust in Cape Coast and a $150 million seizure in Sekondi.

Both cases allegedly involve a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party criticized the government's lack of effective communication on these issues.

“The political explanation from Mr. Kwakye Ofosu did not address our request,” they said. “Silence on these arrests undermines public trust.”

The NPP warned against downplaying drug trafficking and money laundering issues. They emphasized that these matters affect Ghana’s international credibility.

“We caution the government not to trivialize these serious issues,” they stated. “Ghana's compliance with international obligations is at stake.”

Finally, the party reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable. “We will continue our duty to ensure better governance for Ghana.”
