NPP can't lecture gov't on handling of petitions for CJ's removal – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected criticisms from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). These criticisms concern President John Mahama’s handling of petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

Kwakye Ofosu responded directly to MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. Awuah expressed concerns that Mahama's actions could be politically motivated and set a bad precedent.

However, the Minister insisted that the NPP lacks moral authority to criticize the government. He pointed out their past actions as evidence of this.

He questioned Awuah about President Akufo-Addo's similar actions against the Electoral Commission chairperson. "What does he have to say about that?" Kwakye Ofosu asked.

He argued that if the NPP supported Akufo-Addo's actions, they should not challenge Mahama now. The Constitution grants the President power in such matters, and they previously applauded him for it.

Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that Mahama is fulfilling his constitutional duty by considering these petitions. He noted that all public institutions are subject to scrutiny under the Constitution.

He challenged the NPP to identify any specific constitutional violations in this process. He stated that broad claims about political motives should not invalidate lawful procedures.
