NPP demands release of social media activist allegedly arrested by NIB over Facebook post

The Greater Accra Regional executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demand the immediate release of a social media activist. This activist was reportedly arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Reports indicate that the NPP member was detained over a Facebook post. The post allegedly spread false rumors about the vice president.

In a video shared by key NPP figures, former General Secretary John Boadu spoke out against the arrest. He was joined by other party executives from the Greater Accra Region.

Boadu stated, “They claim he said something on Facebook. Young people use this platform to express themselves.” He emphasized that authorities must release him within 48 hours.

Boadu criticized security agencies for suppressing citizens' freedom of speech. He believes this undermines democratic principles in Ghana, which the NPP will resist.

He remarked, “This country has suffered to achieve its current level of freedom.” Many fought and died for democracy, and he feels these issues should be in the past but are worsening instead.

Boadu insisted that the NPP will not allow intimidation of its members. He questioned whether this is what they fought for as a nation.

“We will not sit back while security agencies intimidate our people,” he added. He noted that others have made worse statements without facing consequences.
