Minority Leader Encourages NPP Members After Electoral Defeat
Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader. He has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) members not to lose hope after their recent electoral defeat. He emphasized plans for reorganisation and revitalisation within the party.
Afenyo-Markin believes this process will strengthen the NPP. He called for reconciliation and full participation from all members. Despite being outnumbered, he pointed to their effective presence in Parliament as a sign of potential.
He expressed confidence that unity and divine support would lead to victory in 2028. Afenyo-Markin made these comments on April 4, 2025, during a visit from musicians Great Ampong and Nicholas Omani Acheampong. They came to encourage him and acknowledge his work in Parliament.
Great Ampong referenced a biblical story about Israel's defeat by the Philistines. He reminded Afenyo-Markin that God remained with Israel despite their loss. The minority leader agreed, stating that there is hope even in difficult times.
He recalled visiting Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at night when they were in opposition. Prayer warriors often gathered at his home to pray for the party’s success. Afenyo-Markin noted that calling on God has always been their solution during tough times.
He admitted struggling with the party's defeat in 2024, especially given their successful social policies while in power. He acknowledged mistakes made during the elections that may have led voters to abstain or vote against them.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted that the NPP is known for impactful social intervention programs when in government. In contrast, he criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to deliver on promises made during their time in power.
He expressed optimism that citizens would recognize NPP's achievements by 2028 elections. Recently returned from a party retreat, he stated that reorganisation will focus on reconciliation and engaging youth.
Afenyo-Markin believes these efforts will help reclaim political power from the NDC. Addressing the musicians, he said their support signals readiness to bounce back for 2028 elections.
With rebranding and prayer as key strategies, he remains hopeful for future success.
