Boakye Agyarko, a veteran of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a warning. He believes the NPP must reconnect with its core values. Without urgent reforms, the party risks becoming just a label for self-serving groups.
In his statement titled “Teachings From Our Past: Things We Must Avoid,” Agyarko expressed concern about the party's drift from its founding ideals. He feels the NPP has lost its identity as a true political movement. Instead, it is now fragmented and dominated by narrow interests.
Agyarko stated, “The fundamental problem of the NPP is that we are drifting away from our true form.” He compared this situation to American analyst Stuart Stevens' warning. Stevens noted that parties without higher purposes become mere cartels focused on power.
He criticized the party’s internal elections, which should highlight talent but have turned into fierce battles. “We fight to the brink of death instead of selecting the best among us,” he said. Many view these contests as routes to economic gain rather than service to the nation.
To address these issues, Agyarko proposed mass registration for all NPP supporters and members. This would empower them to elect leaders at every level directly.
“This menace will be curbed if we register all party members—even in their millions,” he stated. He believes this change would dismantle the current command-and-control structure and restore democracy within the party.
