The New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently announced a nationwide “Thank You” tour. This followed their defeat in the 2024 general elections. Many saw it as a chance to thank over four million voters. The party and its Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, aimed for reflection and healing.
However, the tour has revealed deep divisions within the party. Instead of unifying, it has led to public embarrassment. A notable incident involved Kennedy Agyapong and Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC. Their public argument included accusations and classist remarks.
This raises questions about the purpose of the “Thank You” tour. Shouldn’t it focus on reconciliation rather than rivalry? Dr. Bawumia also shifted blame for the party's defeat during this tour. He cited economic hardship and what he called “arrogance of power.” Ironically, this arrogance was evident during the tour itself.
The blame ultimately lies with party leadership. The current chairman promised loyalty but has been ineffective. Under his leadership, unity and post-election recovery have faltered. Why is the party backing Dr. Bawumia so openly? This suggests favoritism ahead of another competitive Flagbearer contest.
Kennedy Agyapong has accused the party of intimidating his supporters. Inviting him on a tour led by his rival seems disingenuous at best. In contrast, President John Mahama conducted his own tours after losing elections in 2016 and 2020 without full party involvement.
The NPP leadership’s support for Dr. Bawumia appears opportunistic. They seem to be betting their futures on his popularity among delegates. This is risky when grassroots members feel disillusioned and angry.
Additionally, the timing of this tour raises concerns. The party faces a crucial national congress in July with key amendments expected. Wouldn't it be wiser to focus on internal healing first?
What the NPP needs now is introspection instead of pageantry. The defeat in 2024 should prompt serious reflection and reform efforts. Professor Mike Oquaye’s fact-finding committee provided a roadmap for change that should guide them.
In summary, this “Thank You” tour is worsening divisions rather than promoting unity. It risks doing more harm than good in an already challenging situation.
