NPP only engaged in legal sophistry in CJ removal process – Amaliba

Abraham Amaliba, the Director General of the National Road Safety Authority, criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He accused them of using "legal sophistry" regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal process.

This follows President Mahama's suspension of Torkornoo on April 22. The suspension came after a prima facie case was established from three petitions. This decision was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and involved the Council of State. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate.

The NPP claims that this is a political witch hunt against the Chief Justice. On April 26, Mr. Amaliba spoke on The Big Issue on Channel One TV. He insisted that President Mahama followed constitutional procedures as outlined in Article 146.

Mr. Amaliba explained that legal sophistry uses misleading arguments to distract from real issues. He stated, "So far, the president has acted according to Article 146." He added that no one can fault the president at this point.

He emphasized that everything is correct in this process. However, he believes the NPP is trying to divert attention with irrelevant points. "If a lawyer focuses on the spirit of the law instead of its letter, he has lost," he said.

Addressing claims of political motivation, Mr. Amaliba remarked, "If it were political and Torkornoo had no baggage, the NDC couldn't have acted."
