NPP, other political parties petition Parliament over CJ’s suspension

A coalition of political parties, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has submitted a petition to Parliament. They are urging the House to persuade President John Dramani Mahama to reverse Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension.

During the petition presentation, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused President Mahama of trying to influence the judiciary. He claimed this was part of a plan for a third term in office. Afenyo-Markin also alleged that the president would appoint an NDC loyalist to chair the Electoral Commission.

He stated that the current government is using intimidation for unfair advantage. "This is a dangerous coordinated attack on Ghana's constitutional democracy," he said. "We march today to resist a new oppressor who governs with dictatorship."

Afenyo-Markin called on Parliament to support political parties in defending judicial neutrality and constitutional values. The Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, received the petition. He promised to send it to Speaker Alban Bagbin for appropriate action.
