NPP, other political parties to protest CJ’s suspension on May 5

A coalition of political parties plans a nationwide demonstration. This protest is set for Monday, May 5. The demonstration will oppose the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The participating parties include the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and others. They aim to defend Ghana’s constitutional order and judicial independence.

The decision for the protest was made during an emergency meeting on April 24, 2025. President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22. This followed three petitions calling for her removal.

The suspension was based on Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. It came after consultations with the Council of State. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the allegations.

On April 25, the political parties issued a joint statement condemning the suspension. They called it a direct attack on judicial independence. The statement said, “This disregard for the rule of law threatens our democracy.”

They accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of judicial intimidation in the past. They referenced a failed attempt in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood.

The planned protest aims to highlight threats to rule of law and democracy in Ghana.
