The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and four other political parties will hold a demonstration. They are protesting the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama.
The NPP has informed the Ghana Police Service about their planned protest. Richard Ahiagba, NPP Director of Communications, spoke to JoyNews. He said, “All five political parties are united for this demonstration.” He added that more parties may join soon.
Ahiagba called on all Ghanaians to participate in the protest. He believes the President's actions against the Chief Justice are unconstitutional and politically motivated. He stated, “This is an attempt to undermine the judiciary.”
The NPP submitted their notice for the demonstration on May 5. They requested police support for security during the event. Ahiagba emphasized their intention for a peaceful protest without disrupting public order.
He expressed concern that these actions threaten democracy in Ghana. Ahiagba also addressed the Ghana Union Movement’s (GUM) withdrawal from the protest. He questioned why any party would withdraw from a legitimate demonstration.
He recalled that when political activities resumed in May 1992, it energized the country. Ahiagba urged GUM to reconsider its decision and stand firm for democracy.
The NPP's planned demonstration follows President Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkonoo. This action was based on a prima facie case determined by the Council of State. The President formed a committee to investigate petitions related to this matter, as required by Article 146(6) of the Constitution.
