NPP, others to stage demo against CJ’s suspension today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties will demonstrate today. This protest is against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following actions by President John Dramani Mahama.

The NPP will march through Accra's main streets. They are joined by the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

The NPP claims the National Democratic Congress's attempt to remove the Chief Justice is dangerous. They view it as interference in the judiciary.

The NPP and its allies have informed the Ghana Police Service about their demonstration plans. Richard Ahiagba, NPP Director of Communications, stated that five political parties are united for this cause.

He mentioned that more parties may join soon. Ahiagba called on all Ghanaians to participate in the protest. He believes the President's actions violate the constitution and threaten democracy.

Ahiagba emphasized their intention for a peaceful demonstration. They have requested police support to maintain public order during the event.

This planned demonstration follows President Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo. The suspension was based on a prima facie case determined by the Council of State.

In response, President Mahama formed a committee to investigate petitions related to this matter. Meanwhile, the Ghana Bar Association has demanded that he revoke Torkornoo's suspension immediately.

They argue that her suspension is unconstitutional and lacks legal grounds under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
