NPP's legacy policies sustaining Ghana’s development under Mahama— Razak Kojo Opoku

Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, Founding President of the UP Tradition Institute, praised the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He called it a key driver of Ghana’s national development. He noted that the 2025 Budget from the Mahama-led government shows the lasting impact of NPP policies.

In his statement, Dr. Opoku highlighted initiatives in the 2025 Budget. Many of these originated under previous NPP administrations. He credited the party for laying the groundwork for Ghana’s economic and social programs.

He pointed out key objectives in the NPP Constitution. These include promoting a free-market economy and encouraging private enterprise. The party also aims to address unemployment and ensure fair wealth distribution while protecting the environment. This vision positions NPP ahead of others, including the NDC.

Dr. Opoku acknowledged challenges faced during Kufuor and Akufo-Addo's administrations. Despite this, he said NPP governments made significant contributions to nation-building.

He emphasized that Mahama’s 2025 Budget continues several important NPP initiatives. These include:

- Free SHS Policy
- School Feeding Programme
- Capitation Grant
- Payment of Teacher and Nursing Trainee Allowances

All these were driven by NPP initiatives.

Other continued efforts include implementing the Earmarked Funds Capping Act from 2017. This ensures proper fund allocation to NHIL, Road Fund, and GNPC.

The amendment of the Mineral Income Investment Fund Act in 2018 channels more resources toward infrastructure development.

There is also an expansion of both Growth and Sustainability Levy and Special Import Levy, which were refined under NPP governments.

Support for NHIS, LEAP, School Feeding Programme, and Capitation Grant has been strengthened too. All these social protection programs began under President Kufuor.

Dr. Opoku commended President Mahama for sustaining these programs. He stressed that policy continuity is vital for rapid national development.

“Even after 120 days of the new government,” he stated, “it is clear that Ghana’s economic management relies on NPP policies.”

He concluded with optimism about NPP's prospects in 2028. He urged unity behind strong presidential and parliamentary candidates.

Dr. Opoku believes that legacies from former Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo are valuable assets for upcoming elections.
