NPP’s military withdrawal from galamsey fight is a cardinal sin against humanity – Omane Boamah

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah criticized the former NPP government. He condemned their withdrawal of military forces from the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

In a Facebook post on April 4, he called this decision a "cardinal sin against humanity." He emphasized its negative impact on Ghana’s environment and natural resources.

His comments followed a press conference by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. The government outlined its position on anti-galamsey operations during this event.

Dr. Omane Boamah warned that stopping military involvement would embolden illegal miners. He noted it would also accelerate environmental degradation.

He shared good news: soldiers are back to fight galamsey under President John Dramani Mahama's directive. He expressed confidence in these renewed efforts.

The Defence Minister highlighted achievements made during the Mahama administration. He mentioned significant progress in protecting forest reserves from illegal mining activities.

"We have saved seven forest reserves so far," he stated. He stressed that actions matter more than promises.

Dr. Omane Boamah vowed to continue the fight with greater vigor. The government will trace equipment owners used for galamsey operations, including using chassis numbers for identification.

He urged all stakeholders to support efforts against illegal mining. Under President Mahama's leadership, Ghana will take bold action to protect its natural resources.
