Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi are upset. They criticize the government for targeting their Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
The supporters claim that since January 7, 2025, Mr. Boasiako has faced intimidation. They believe these actions threaten democratic principles. They urge President John Mahama to intervene and uphold the rule of law.
Their concerns follow a raid by National Security operatives at Mr. Boasiako’s home in Paraku Estate on Friday morning. This incident attracted many NPP supporters, leading to a tense standoff with security personnel. Senior party officials eventually intervened to defuse the situation.
Sources close to Mr. Boasiako say the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) invited him for questioning on May 21. He requested to reschedule for May 25 due to health reasons. Despite this, National Security officers visited his home days before the new date.
NPP supporters argue that if the government has valid concerns about Mr. Boasiako or others, it should use legal channels. They warn against using force or intimidation to silence dissenting voices. Such actions could threaten the nation’s democracy.
