Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the home of Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman. This gathering followed an attempted arrest by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service on May 23, 2025.
The crowd grew throughout the morning. They protested against heavily armed security personnel surrounding Wontumi's property. The reason for this operation remains unclear. Wontumi was reportedly inside during the raid. He assured officers he would respond to their invitation on May 26, 2025.
As tensions rose, party loyalists chanted slogans in defiance. The NIB then ordered all officers to withdraw from the scene. Although the atmosphere has calmed, many NPP supporters still remain near his residence.
Kwame Adom-Appiah addressed journalists about the situation. He is the party’s regional secretary and part of Wontumi’s legal team. He condemned the operation as unnecessary and poorly handled.
He stated, “Arriving with about 20 vehicles for an arrest is inappropriate.” He added that deploying so many cars is excessive and burdensome for the state. A simple invitation would have sufficed, he said. If Wontumi failed to honor it, there are lawful ways to make an arrest.
