President John Dramani Mahama welcomed Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang back from her health trip abroad.
During a briefing at the presidency, he expressed relief at her return. He mentioned that he missed her presence. Her absence complicated his duties, especially during a trip to Togo. This trip led to threats of impeachment from the NPP opposition.
Mahama said, “I particularly missed you. Traveling out of the country has been difficult.” He added, “They threatened to impeach me just for going to Togo while you were away.” He noted that many believed she should have been there with him.
Despite the challenges, Mahama felt they managed to fulfill many promises made to Ghanaians. He also shared that doctors told him she is "20 years younger" and fit for her role. He advised her to take it easy for a while before resuming full duties.
This welcome comes as the Minority in Parliament considers impeachment proceedings against Mahama. The NPP accuses him of serious constitutional breaches by leaving the country without an acting president.
The minority claims Mahama violated the 1992 Constitution by being absent alongside both the Vice President and Speaker of Parliament. They pointed out that all three officials were abroad simultaneously: Opoku-Agyemang was in the UK for medical treatment, Mahama attended an African Union conference in Togo, and Speaker Alban Bagbin was also out of the country.
With all three unavailable, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is on suspension and cannot step in. In an interview with Joy News, MP John Darko stated that Ghanaians must fight against this act by the President.
He emphasized that when Mahama chose to travel, he knew it would create a constitutional vacuum. Darko criticized Mahama's decision as irresponsible and warned they would pursue impeachment if necessary.
He concluded by stating they would not allow violations of their Constitution without consequences.
