NPP urges judges to resist attempts to remove Chief Justice

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged Ghana’s judges to unite. He wants them to resist efforts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He believes these efforts are politically motivated.

Afenyo-Markin expressed his concerns at a press briefing. This followed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee meeting on April 16.

He stated that the judiciary should not be part of politics. An impartial judiciary is essential for justice, he added. He criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for trying to politicize the judiciary.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called on judges nationwide to stand together. He described attempts to remove the Chief Justice as orchestrated and questionable.

He also urged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to speak out against this situation.

In related news, the Supreme Court has adjourned an injunction application hearing. This application challenges President John Mahama's procedure regarding the Chief Justice's potential removal. The court will hear it again on May 6 after a request from legal representatives.
