The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Greater Accra. They must remove unauthorized billboards from road medians by Monday, 2 June 2025. If they do not comply, legal action will follow.
This warning comes after a failed meeting with the assemblies. Many did not attend a crucial session about billboard regulation compliance. The NRSA had hoped for dialogue and possibly an extension of the previous 21-day deadline. However, poor attendance left officials disappointed.
NRSA Director-General Mr. Abraham Amaliba expressed frustration over the assemblies' behavior. He noted that they misunderstood the invitation from the Local Government Ministry. Some assemblies from outside Accra attended instead of those within the city.
Mr. Amaliba stated that their absence indicates deliberate noncompliance. He emphasized that the NRSA has no choice but to escalate this matter legally. The lack of engagement shows a disinterest in addressing the issue.
He warned that this means they are not interested in complying with regulations. The NRSA believes unauthorized billboards on road medians pose significant safety risks. Removing these structures is essential for safe roadways for both motorists and pedestrians.
The original directive included a 21-day removal notice but now includes potential litigation for non-compliance by the deadline. This latest action shows a tougher stance on enforcement by authorities in Ghana's urban signage landscape.
