The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) plans to sue Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Greater Accra. This action follows the MMDAs' failure to remove illegal billboards along roads.
The NRSA had given a 21-day ultimatum for the removal of unauthorized billboards and posters. This directive specifically targeted billboards in road medians.
Abraham Amaliba, Acting Director-General of the NRSA, expressed disappointment. He wanted to meet with the MMDAs to discuss compliance but they did not attend a scheduled meeting on May 29.
Due to their absence, the NRSA will proceed with legal action. Amaliba stated that their lack of response shows disinterest in resolving the issue.
He emphasized that these billboards hinder motorists' visibility from a distance. In April, the NRSA warned MMDAs about unauthorized billboards posing risks to drivers and pedestrians.
The Authority noted an increase in unregulated billboards on road medians and near intersections. These structures obstruct views and distract drivers, creating safety concerns.
