The National Service Authority (NSA) aims to place 50% of personnel in the private sector. This is part of a new strategy to improve employment readiness. It also seeks to reduce reliance on the public sector.
Currently, over 80% of national service personnel work in public institutions.
In an interview on Joy FM's GhanaConnect, NSA Acting Executive Director Felix Gyamfi shared their plans. The NSA is partnering with business associations and private firms. This collaboration will help expand placement opportunities for graduates.
Gyamfi stated, “Our goal is to create a system where graduates gain practical skills.” He hopes for a 50-50 split between private and public placements this year. However, he wishes they could achieve up to 70% in the private sector.
He stressed the need to align national service with industry demands. Gyamfi highlighted the Tema Industrial area as an example of untapped potential. He questioned why such a busy industrial zone lacks significant service personnel engagement.
“I don’t understand why we don't have 10,000 service personnel in Tema,” he said. He believes that when NSS personnel enter these industries, it benefits everyone involved. They learn valuable skills and contribute meaningfully to themselves and the country.
