A truck heading to Guinea had a serious accident in Kabampe. The truck, with registration number GN 2247, was carrying acidic lime powder. It capsized on the Damongo-Sawla Highway in the Savannah Region.
The trailer detached from the truck, putting the driver and his mate at risk. Driver Osimanu Mamado and mate Karimu Sass narrowly escaped injury.
Karimu explained, “We were returning to Guinea from Tema. At dawn, we saw many potholes. My master tried to avoid them. While dodging one, our trailer detached and overturned.” He added that they were lucky no other vehicles were nearby.
The Damongo-Sawla section of the highway has many extreme potholes. Some are so deep they resemble streams.
This road project was funded by a grant from the African Development Bank. It aimed to reduce long travel times on poor roads for commuters in Northern and Upper West regions.
However, less than four years later, this section of the road showed cracks and potholes. It has become dangerous for all types of commuters.
