Former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo has reiterated the need to protect Ghana’s public funds, emphasizing adherence to constitutional and statutory laws over theological principles.
Speaking on the National Cathedral controversy, he criticized the reliance on faith-based oversight for public resources, stressing that state funds must be managed with laws like the Public Procurement Act and the Internal Audit Act.
The controversy, involving the project’s trustees—predominantly clergy—has drawn criticism following a CHRAJ report revealing the mismanagement of GHC2.6 million.
The report recommends a forensic audit and potential prosecution of the trustees.
Domelevo noted that while the cathedral was intended to honor God, over GHC50 million has been spent despite minimal progress, resulting in substantial losses.
He urged strict legal adherence to prevent further misuse of public funds.
