A joint operation by National Security has led to the arrest of nine people. This includes eight Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian. They are connected to the disappearance of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at Tema Port.
Investigators traced cables, believed to be part of the missing shipment. These cables were found at an aluminum smelting facility owned by the Chinese nationals in Shai Hills. Acting on intelligence, security operatives raided the facility and arrested the suspects.
This is a significant development in the ECG container scandal. Over 1,300 containers filled with electrical cables and equipment have gone missing.
The Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, announced that a criminal investigation will begin. He stressed the need for a forensic probe into how the containers were removed from the port.
Jinapor stated, “We will launch a criminal investigation into this matter.” He added that it is crucial to determine where and how those containers were taken out. National security, ports, clearing companies, and ECG will all be investigated.
He expressed confidence that they would uncover the truth. “I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it,” he said.
In an interview with TV3 on March 27, Jinapor revealed authorities recovered 40 missing ECG containers at a terminal in Kpone. An Indian national has also been arrested in connection with this case. The suspect claims he legally acquired the containers last year.
