The discovery of official Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes in Sarpeiman has raised alarms. This suburb is located in the Ga West Municipality of Greater Accra Region. The cash boxes are linked to a major counterfeiting operation.
This incident raises concerns about regulatory failures and financial security in Ghana. It also suggests possible insider involvement in this elaborate criminal setup.
During a site inspection, Richard Jakpa confirmed the authenticity of the recovered money boxes. He is the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. “Authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,” he said, increasing worries about how they ended up with criminals.
The operation was uncovered in February. It was disguised as a battery-charging shop in an abandoned building. The elderly man running this front is known as the “Battery Doctor.” He allegedly covered for mass production of counterfeit currency and fake gold bars.
Authorities seized ten 40-foot containers filled with forged Ghana cedis, US dollar notes, and gold-plated metals. Two additional containers were moved just before the security raid.
Investigators are pursuing a suspect known only as “Alhaji.” He is believed to be the mastermind behind this operation. Mr. Jakpa stated there is solid evidence linking him to the crime scene.
“Alhaji is a central figure in this syndicate,” he said. Efforts are underway to bring him to justice and dismantle his network involved in financial crimes.
