National security finds more allegedly stolen ECG materials in Kumasi, Takoradi

ECG Missing Containers: More Stolen Electrical Materials Found in Kumasi and Takoradi

National Security has discovered more stolen electrical equipment. This equipment is believed to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The findings occurred over the weekend of April 5 in Kumasi and Takoradi.

In Kumasi, an operation led by John Kwame Jabari uncovered 125 stolen cables. These cables were hidden in an uncompleted building. In Takoradi, a large stockpile of electrical materials was found at Kansawurodo, a suburb of Sekondi-Takoradi.

The operation was based on a tip-off. Several valuable items were also hidden in another uncompleted building linked to ECG. Recovered items included 46 cable drums, switches, meters, and iron angle bars.

Hashim Torkonu from National Security reported two arrests related to this incident. He stated that no one has claimed ownership of the goods yet. Residents also seem unaware of who owns them.

On March 26, Energy Minister John Jinapor announced that 1,357 ECG containers went missing from Tema port. An audit revealed these containers contained essential equipment and materials meant for clearance in 2024 but were left stranded.

Initially, ECG claimed there were 2,491 uncleared containers. The government traced some missing containers to a warehouse owned by an Indian national in Kpone. National Security made 14 arrests linked to two aluminium smelting companies in Shai Hills.

Additional containers were found at Atlas Dry Port as well. On April 2, police seized a truck loaded with electrical cables suspected to be from the missing containers.

Recently, Speaker Alban Bagbin approved a request for the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to meet with MP A Plus regarding this issue. This meeting was scheduled for April 7 and his lawyer was expected to attend.

The inquiry follows A Plus's disclosure about a truck carrying cables breaking down in his constituency. This incident raised links to the missing ECG goods.
