Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the MP for Akim Swedru, opposes the new fuel levy. He calls it a heavy financial burden on Ghanaians. He compares it to the criticized E-Levy from the previous NPP administration.
In a Facebook post, Nyarko noted that the NPP provided stable electricity for nearly nine years. During that time, they did not impose a "dumsor levy" despite high energy costs. He stated, “I keep saying that vindication is in the womb of time.”
Nyarko revealed that Ghana consumed about 5.8 billion litres of fuel in 2024. With a GHS1.00 levy per litre, the government could collect around GHS5.8 billion. This amount is nearly three times what was raised through the E-Levy.
He explained that for every GHS100 spent on fuel, Ghanaians will pay an extra GHS36 as a levy. Nyarko believes this situation is worse than what people criticized about the E-Levy.
His comments come as public concern grows over the new levy. Many fear it will increase transport fares and raise prices for goods and services. This adds more pressure to an already strained cost of living in Ghana.
