The Office of the Vice President emphasizes the need for economic transformation. This includes mobilizing revenue and creating a fair tax system.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang represented the Vice President at a graduation ceremony. Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia spoke about the Ghana Revenue Authority's crucial role. He noted that recent international funding cuts have impacted Ghana significantly.
Segbefia explained that these challenges highlight the need for home-grown solutions. The government is reviewing tax exemptions to promote transparency and growth. They aim to enhance trade competitiveness by rationalizing port fees.
He stressed that the Ghana Revenue Authority is essential for these efforts. The revenue collected supports national development projects like schools and hospitals. Vigilance at ports will help reduce smuggling and protect local businesses.
Segbefia announced plans to improve Customs Division staff capacity. The division needs 5,329 staff but currently has only 2,635. He assured that steps are being taken to resource this sector adequately.
The government is committed to equipping the Ghana Revenue Authority for better revenue generation. Segbefia's presence at the event underscores this commitment. Improvements in staff conditions and resources are expected soon.
