New disinformation bill not meant to gag dissent – Sam George

Minister Samuel Nartey George, known as Sam George, announced plans for a new bill. This bill aims to combat misinformation and disinformation in Ghana.

In an interview with Roland Walker on TV3, he stressed the need for action. He noted that even Parliament has been affected by misleading information recently.

“The ministry will introduce legislation to address mis- and disinformation,” he said. He urged Parliament members to support this initiative.

Sam George mentioned that false information disrupted parliamentary proceedings last week. “Even yesterday, there was misinformation in this chamber,” he stated. He added that misinformation had impacted parliamentary business twice in one week.

The Minister highlighted the dangers of misinformation to democracy and public trust. He called for strong measures to tackle the issue effectively.

“It’s crucial we take misinformation seriously and deal with it decisively,” he said. He emphasized that those spreading false information should face legal consequences.

The upcoming bill is likely to spark discussions about free speech and digital regulation. It will also address the government's role in managing information flow in our digital society.
